Farm/Art Exchange: New Woodcut
Aug 6, 2014 at 05:36PM
Heading into the backstretch I'm at work on a woodcut
featuring the Deer Isle Hostel (Deer Isle, Maine). The owners, Dennis
Carter and Anneli Sundquist Carter, while not commercial organic
farmers, raise all their own food in a magnificent garden spread out in
front of the hand built wood house that serves as lodging for hostel
guests. I visited the hostel last fall when the garden, and the
sunflowers, were at their peak. Based on sketches and photos, I designed
the wood cut for a 14" x 18" block of shina plywood. This wood cuts
easily using the traditional Japanese wood cut tools.
On August 24th the Opening of the exhibition, Farm/Art Exchange 2014, will take place at Reversing Falls Sanctuary in Brooksville, Maine. 40% of all sales will benefit Revsering Falls Sanctuary. Artists of many disciplines have been paired with organic farmers to celebrate the creativity of both agriculture and the arts. The exhibit runs from August 28 through September 7, Thursday through Sunday 1 to 4.
